Staying Safe Running and Walking Alone: A Practical Guide

Most runs and walks are uneventful. A few simple habits keep it that way and mean you have a plan if something feels wrong.

Before you go

  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back, or share your live location
  • Vary your time and route on quieter stretches
  • Charge your phone, and check your alarm is on your keys or belt

While you are out

  • Keep one ear free, or the volume low, so you hear what is around you
  • Choose lit, busier routes after dark
  • Wear something bright or reflective
  • Trust your instincts: cross the road, change direction, head for people

If something feels wrong

Pull the pin on your alarm early. A 130dB+ siren and strobe make it very hard for anyone to stay unnoticed. Move towards people and light, and call 999 (UK) or your local emergency number if you are in danger.

Dog walkers

Clip your alarm to the lead handle or your keys so it is already in your hand.
